Dr. Gustavo Diaz, a facial plastic surgeon at the Lifestyle Lift center in Huntersville, was charged with unprofessional conduct by the medical board in April 2013 for sedating two patients without sufficient monitoring and for performing surgeries “not appropriate” for the care they were seeking, according to a hearing notice filed with the board.
Diaz also prescribed a “controlled substance medication” to a family member, the notice said.
Diaz’s attorney, Mary B. Wells of Young, Moore and Henderson law firm in Raleigh, said in an email that she and her client would defend the allegations at the October hearing. She declined to comment further.
With the initial allegations pending, the board received a separate complaint regarding a patient who was found unresponsive by a family member the day after Diaz performed a facelift in October 2009. Paramedics later pronounced the patient dead.
After an examination, a medical expert found Diaz had not completely examined the patient’s heart and lungs or reviewed the patient’s medical history before the surgery, did not monitor the patient during surgery and failed to check vital signs prior to discharge, the notice said.
Diaz is still accepting patients in his Huntersville office, a receptionist said last week.
