Hair Transplant Costs

Over the years the hair transplant procedure  has evolved from large unattractive plugs to the highly refined follicular unit hair transplantation.

In the 1980 and early 1990 the cost for a hair transplant was based on a per plug fee. This ranged from $5-12 per plug. A typical hair transplant session would involve 40-130 hair plugs in a session. Most patients would need 2 to 4 sessions spaced out about every 6 weeks to achieve a relatively full look. Today hair transplantation involves transplanting thousands of individual follicular units. A follicular unit is a naturally occurring hair bundle of 1-4 hairs.

The cost for hair transplantation today can range significantly based on the technique – follicular unit extraction, known as FUE or strip harvesting, also referred to as follicular unit transplantation or FUT.

Many practices still charge per graft – typically ranging from $2 to $8 per follicular unit. Other practices charge per area treated.

Hair transplant sessions can range from $3,000 to over $20,000 depending on the amount of hair transplanted and area to be covered.
